Cap 8-15 (25) cm; stalk central, 10-18 cm long x 2-3 (4) cm diameter at apex, 4-6 (10) cm diameter at base; pores 2-3/mm, round.

Basidiospores (13) 14-17 (19) x 4-6.5 µm, subfusiform, smooth, inequilaterla.

Diagnostic macroscopic feature

This is thought to be a species complex. The Iowa variety tends to be paler in color and with stalks that are almost equal from apex to base; reticulations on the top half of the stalk are a distinguishing feature of the species
